Recently, many patients ask me for different problems in the skin of their genital area, and
for different I mean in the aspect of the lesion. In general if this lesions appear in the glans of penis are call BALANITIS, that it is an inflammation (consequence of infection or other factor). In the case that the inflammation involves the foreskin is term BALANOPOSTHITIS.
If you review the information about this problem in scientific magazines, you probably do not
find a lot of information or current available information. I will discuss about a couple of articles that I found in BJU International and The Journal of American Family Physician.

infection: skin infection from bacteria that usually lives on our skin, so summer is the perfect weather for the grow of these bacteria. Especially (and in most of them) if the patient is uncircumcised. Of course other causes are poor personal hygiene (?), irritants, drug allergies, obesity, some medical conditions (diabetes, cirrhosis, cardiac problems), sexual transmitted
diseases, etc.

Balanitis can occur in males at any age. Etiologies vary depending on age, so it can be present as
early as a teenager and older as a man in his 80´s. It ´s extremely important to consult an urologist, because we have to differentiate the cause of the balanitis and if it´s benign or malignant. Be aware that some kinds on balanitis (especially in older men) are pre-malignant or even malignant.
The treatment depends on the etiology, with antibiotics, steroids and even surgical for uncircumcised men. Notice that circumcision (cut off the foreskin) is an important step in the treatment and this procedure won´t diminish the sexual desired and pleasure according to an article from Archivos Españoles de Urologia.
